Did you know when you come stay with us at the Admiral’s Inn during the Yuletide season that you’re a mere stone’s throw from the “#2 Christmas Town in America,” as evaluated by HGTV?
We’re talking about Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude, which turns that famous resort town into a holiday dream from December 1 through December 11. It’s but a half-hour or so drive to the Christmas Prelude from Ogunquit, and the trifling journey’s well worth it!
One Long Christmas Party
We don’t have the room here to detail all that goes on during the 35th annual Christmas Prelude, not by a long shot. Between the light- and wreath-spangled streets, the concerts and ornament-decorating and gingerbread-house-making, the pony and trolley and boat rides, the wine tastings and Christmas karaoke, the pancake breakfasts and lobster suppers, and holiday shopping at Kennebunkport’s businesses and some special craft fairs, it is, needless to say, quite the event! Besides all the merrymaking, Christmas Prelude’s a fine opportunity to check off the last few items on your Christmas shopping list.
Santa Claus, Maine-Style
On December 2, the real kickoff for the proceedings happens with the tree lighting at Dock Square, which that evening also sees caroling by the Kennebunk High School Chamber Choir and a live nativity scene by the South Congressional Church. Another highlight, without a doubt, comes on December 4 with the arrival of Santa Claus on…not a reindeer-drawn sleigh, mind you, but a genuine Maine lobster boat: a much more regionally appropriate mode of transport, we’d venture. He’ll make landfall accompanied by his faithful “Lobster Elves,” and the whole North Pole crew will make time for pictures at the Community House over on Temple Street.
Colorful Christmas fireworks will flare up the wintry sky over the town’s cove at 6:15 PM on December 9. Then there’s the 6thAnnual Pooch Parade at 11 AM on December 11, when holiday-costumed dogs will strut their stuff between Consolidated School and the beautiful Victorian-era White Columns home. That’s the kind of spectacle to rival even red-suited Saint Nick stepping ashore off a lobster boat…
